Stockbower Powers Garnet Win

TOWSON, Md. -- The Swarthmore women's basketball team (3-4) made a last-minute run to win 56-53 in a non-conference game at Goucher (4-4).

Goucher had a 10-point lead with less than three minutes left in the first half but with 2:18 remaining in the half Garnet sophomore Lisa Schumacher (Middlebury, Conn. / Westover School) shot a jumper and was fouled by Gopher sophomore Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md. / Institute of Notre Dame). Schumacher sunk the extra point to narrow the Goucher lead to only five points.

Stockbower The Gophers were up 31-26 at the conclusion of the first half, but it was the Garnet returned to the court to play following half time.

Swarthmore senior Karen Berk (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) had a game-high 25 points to post a double-double. Grabbing 14 rebounds Berk was just one rebound shy of becoming Swarthmore’s fourth all time rebounder (773 held by Kim Wright ‘84). The senior forward shot 5-for-6 at the line for the Garnet.

Ceylan Bodur ’11 (Istanbul, Turkey / Robert College) sank in a 3-pointer with five minutes remaining in the game to send the Garnet on a seven point run.

Marking her sixth double-double, Kathryn Stockbower ’11 (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) had 14 total rebounds and scored 10 points. Junior guard Lauren Popovics (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) dished a game high five assists.

Goucher senior Shadae Swan (Baltimore, Md. / St. Frances Academy) went 9-for-10 at the line and added a team-high 20 points. Forward Smith made 12 points for the Gophers and was just one rebound shy of marking her third double-double of the season.

Swarthmore women’s basketball travels to Bryn Mawr Tuesday, Dec. 11 for a non-conference game with a tip-off time of 7:30 p.m.
