Morrison Breaks On Through Devils

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore senior forward Julia Morrison (#6) scored the game's lone goal in the first two minutes of play and the Garnet defense claimed its second straight shut-out as Swarthmore defeated the Red Devils 1-0 in Centennial field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore improves to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial while Dickinson falls to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial.

The Garnet took possession at the onset, and quickly moved the ball in the offensive zone.  A crowd of players from both teams formed in front of the net and, after three Swarthmore attempts were saved by Dickinson goalkeeper Amanda West, the ball came out to Morrison who promptly put it home to give the home team a 1-0 lead.  It is the second goal of the season for Morrison and the eighth of her career.

The Garnet entered today's game second in the Centennial, allowing only 1.35 goals per game. Swarthmore's stingy defense, led by captain Julie Monaghan '07 and Anna Baeth '09, limited the Red Devils chances on this day as well - Dickinson managed only two shots in the second half.

Swarthmore senior goalie Karen Lorang, also a captain, made three stops for the fourth shut-out of her career.  Dickinson netminder Amanda West turned away 13 shots for the Red Devils.

Swarthmore out-shot the Red Devils 17-6 for the game and took six penalty corners to Dickinson's three.

The Garnet resume Centennial field hockey play on Tuesday, Oct. 3 when Johns Hopkins (winners of five straight) arrive for a 7:00 p.m. game.
