Garnet Rank High In ITA Fall Listing

The Swarthmore women's tennis team, the 2005 Centennial Conference champion, has been ranked 26th in the nation and seventh in the Atlantic South Region, in the final fall rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ITA ranked the top 30 teams in the nation, as well as the top handful of teams in each region. This spring Swarthmore will play four teams ranked in the top 25, including top-ranked Emory University (GA) and #2 Washington & Lee (VA).

In addition to appearing on both ITA ranking lists, the Garnet women's tennis also had a number of individual players appear on the fall ITA regional rankings. Junior Sonya Reynolds, an ITA All-American selection in 2004, is ranked number 13 in the Atlantic South Region in singles, while freshman Jennie Park is ranked 16th. The doubles team of Reynolds and junior Marissa Matthews are ranked eight in the region.

Reynolds went 18-5 in singles play in 2005, earning an invitation to compete in the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship at Kalamazoo College on May 21-23.  Four of her defeats were to fellow Division III All-Americans, with the other coming against a Division I foe.  Reynolds posted an 8-1 record in Centennial Conference matches at No.1 singles and then cruised through the Centennial Individual Championships without dropping a set, becoming the third Garnet woman to capture the singles title.

In the final ITA rankings of 2004, Reynolds finished up 18th in the nation and 7th in the Atlantic South Region.  Reynolds, teamed with Matthews, also earned a No. 15 doubles ranking in the region
