Here are some of the readings\/viewings for Fall 2018:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plato\u2019s \u201cParable of the Cave\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>Scheherazade as story-teller (a brief <em>Arabian Nights<\/em> sampling, using a fine new translation in which this famous heroine is called Shadrazad);<\/li>\n<li>Edwidge Danticat\u2019s portrait of the artist in her essay \u201cCreate Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>An introduction to the art of Mary Lee Bendolph and the Gee\u2019s Bend African American quilting tradition in Alabama (special materials arranged by the Department of Art and the List Gallery)<\/li>\n<li>Mozart (as portrayed in the Oscar-winning movie <em>Amadeus<\/em>);<\/li>\n<li>Two witty short plays by the comedian Steve Martin\u2014<em>Patter for the Floating Lady<\/em> and <em>Picasso at\u00a0the Lapin Agile<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>The documentary <em>Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision<\/em>, plus (for comparison\/contrast) two pieces on the rise of Awkwafina<\/li>\n<li>Ruth Ozeki\u2019s <em>A Tale for the Time Being<\/em> (2013);<\/li>\n<li>Tony Kushner\u2019s epic play <em>Angels in America<\/em> Parts I and II<\/li>\n<li>Sandra Cisneros\u2019 portrait of the artist as a young woman, \u201cLittle Miracles, Kept Promises\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Listen to and discuss the song \u201cBreathe,\u201d from Lin-Manuel Miranda\u2019s Tony award-winning musical <em>In the Heights<\/em> (2008). YouTube.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 and concluding with some awesome recent music videos by Donald Glover (Childish Gambino\u2019s <em>This Is America<\/em>) and Janelle Mon\u00e1e, <em>Dirty Computer<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also to be assigned are selected background and critical materials, including the Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat\u2019s essay \u201cCreate Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Considerable time will be devoted to improving each student\u2019s analytical writing and discussion skills.
