Have you ever been stopped at a light but feel you need to respond to the text from your kid? Or maybe you have one hand amess with oil and herbs but you need to pull up the recipe to remember that last ingredient before placing the dish in the oven? Or perhaps you have a broken wrist and still need to respond to the 82 emails you received today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speech-to-text options on your mobile, tablet, and desktop\/laptop devices can help you in these\u2014and many other\u2014situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speech-to-text options allow you to type without touching the device.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Many of the more robust speech-to-text tools were originally built and inspired by folks who use speech as an input for all functions on their devices. We will not discuss that software here, but if that is something you need, please reach out to support.swarthmore.edu<\/a> to inquire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dictation on desktops<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mac<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
  1. From the Apple <\/strong>menu, <\/li>
  2.  Select System Settings<\/strong>,<\/li>
  3. then click Keyboard <\/strong>in the sidebar.<\/li>
  4. Go to Dictation <\/strong>on the right, <\/li>
  5. then toggle it On<\/strong>. A microphone will now appear as a text entry option.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Dictation on mobile devices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Android: Talk to Text<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    1. On your Android phone or tablet, install Gboard<\/strong>.<\/li>
    2. Open <\/strong>any app that you can type with, such as Gmail or Keep.<\/li>
    3. Tap <\/strong>an area where you can enter text. A microphone will now appear as a text entry option.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      iOS: Dictation Keyboard<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
      1. Open Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>
      2. Select General<\/strong>,<\/li>
      3. Then select Keyboard<\/strong>.<\/li>
      4. Scroll down.<\/li>
      5. Toggle Enable Dictation<\/strong>. A microphone will now appear as a text entry option.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
