{"id":8802,"date":"2023-10-25T14:22:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T18:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=8802"},"modified":"2023-10-25T16:23:21","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T20:23:21","slug":"meet-the-elite-3d-printer-fleet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2023\/10\/25\/meet-the-elite-3d-printer-fleet\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Elite 3D Printer Fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/PXL_20231018_204456157.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A new crew of community 3D printers has landed in the Makerspace!<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/original-prusa-mk4-2\/\">Prusa MK4 machines<\/a> are some of the best of their kind you can find coming out these days &#8212; representing an optimization of capability and accessibility, they are workhorses capable of turning out a large number of 3D prints but also make printing easy to start with relatively little knowledge of the process.<br><br>If you&#8217;re familiar with 3D printing, great! These are single-extruder FDM printers that run on open source software and are built with free, readily-downloadable 3D printed components. <em>Editorial note<\/em>: there is something particularly sublime and maybe unsettling (given advances in AI) about seeing a printer print a copy of itself. \ud83d\ude42<br><br>If you&#8217;re NOT familiar with 3D printing, this is a great time to jump in. The basic workflow is: <br><br><strong>(3D digital model) -> (Slicer) -> (3D printer)<\/strong><br><br>The <strong>digital models<\/strong> are either created by you, on software available in the makerspace or they are downloaded from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printables.com\/\">vast community<\/a> of free or for-charge 3D models online.<br><br>The <strong>Slicer <\/strong>is an intermediary program that prepares your 3D model for printing (by virtually &#8220;slicing&#8221; it into layers that will be printed physically one by one).
