Holyoke, and Smith colleges on December 7 and 8 of 2020. It was sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberalarts.org\/projects\/mindshare\/\">CLAC\u2019s Mindshare Program<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CLAC stands for Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges and is a professional group for IT staff at liberal arts schools.&nbsp; A mindshare \u201cbrings together staff from member institutions to engage in short-term collaborations to explore topics of mutual interest\u201d.&nbsp; Ours focused on accessibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We received over 100 registrants from more than 40 schools across the country.&nbsp; One of the highlights of the conference was a session on \u201cCool New Accessibility Tools\u201d presented by Crystal Rose Hill from Wesleyan University.&nbsp; Here are a few that might be of interest to our community and nearly all are free:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speech-To-Text Programs (Dictation)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mac users have built-in <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/mac-help\/use-dictation-mh40584\/mac\">dictation<\/a> provided through the OS<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H47I8fKEk3Q\">See Mac Dictation in action<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Windows users have built-in <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4042244\/windows-10-use-dictation\">speech recognition<\/a> for dictation through Windows 10.<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nBRuNtNu5z8\">See Windows Speech Recognition in action<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/docs\/answer\/4492226?hl=en\">Google Docs has built-in \u201cVoice Typing\u201d<\/a>, a feature for dictation that can be used when you are accessing it through the Chrome browser (free for anyone with a Google account)<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eiveZijKpCs\">See Google Voice Typing in action<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Text-To-Speech Programs (Read Aloud)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mac users have built-in <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/mac-help\/have-your-mac-speak-text-thats-on-the-screen-mh27448\/mac\">read-aloud<\/a> provided through the OS<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dowviVW1zcw\">See Mac Reader in action<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techspot.com\/downloads\/5814-balabolka.html\">Balabolka<\/a> (a document reader that also converts to MP3) is a free program for Windows users, and also has a \u201cportable\u201d version that can be installed on a USB flash drive to be used on any Windows machine (great when using public\/shared\/borrowed computers)<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CFjXndaEais\">See Balabolka in action<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.captivoice.com\/capti-site\/\">Capti Voice<\/a> is a personalized reading support tool; the platform creates an \u201cMP3\u201d player interface with imported text documents. Free accounts are available with limited features (individual\/institutional licensing available).
