{"id":706,"date":"2010-11-12T20:07:53","date_gmt":"2010-11-12T20:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=706"},"modified":"2010-11-12T20:07:53","modified_gmt":"2010-11-12T20:07:53","slug":"freshen-up-your-java","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2010\/11\/12\/freshen-up-your-java\/","title":{"rendered":"Freshen up your Java!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, I\u2019m not talking about coffee but rather the software that permeates most of our computers.\u00a0 Sun\u2019s (now Oracle\u2019s) Java is ubiquitous in today\u2019s computing environment.\u00a0 Unfortunately, as is often the case with widely installed software, it is a major target for attackers and malware writers.\u00a0 Add to this the fact that Java often has numerous security holes and you\u2019ve got a formula for mass infection.\u00a0 (Frankly, Java makes it <a href=\"http:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2010\/06\/dont-need-java-junk-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">very difficult to keep a computer secure<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>What can you do to help the situation?<\/p>\n<p>1) Make sure you\u2019re always running the latest version.\u00a0 You can find what version you\u2019re running and whether it\u2019s the latest by visiting this link: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.java.com\/en\/download\/installed.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.java.com\/en\/download\/installed.jsp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If your version is out of date, the web site will provide a link to get the latest copy.\u00a0 Another way to check in Windows is to go to the Control Panel and double-click on the Java icon.\u00a0 If you have an \u2018Update\u2019 tab, you can select that and then click the \u2018Update Now\u2019 button.\u00a0 The Update function will let you know if you\u2019re up to date or if a newer version is available.<\/p>\n<p>2) Periodically clean out your Java temporary files.<\/p>\n<p>While you\u2019re in the Java Control Panel, it\u2019s always a good idea to click on the General tab then the \u2018Settings\u2026\u2019 button and then the \u2018Delete Files\u2019 button (below).\u00a0 Click OK in the next pop up.\u00a0 Malicious software often hides with the temporary Java files so clearing these out periodically will help get rid of any software that shouldn\u2019t be there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/java_temp_files.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-707\" title=\"Deleting Java Temp Files\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/java_temp_files-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/java_temp_files-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/java_temp_files-78x60.jpg 78w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/java_temp_files.jpg 476w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Mac users, don\u2019t think you\u2019re immune to Java security problems on the PC!\u00a0 There\u2019s currently a <a href=\"http:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2010\/10\/koobface-worm-targets-java-on-mac-os-x\/\" target=\"_blank\">worm spreading through Facebook<\/a> that uses Java to attack Mac OS X.\u00a0 On Macs, you can check if your Java is up to date by running Apple\u2019s software update.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, I\u2019m not talking about coffee but rather the software that permeates most of our computers.\u00a0 Sun\u2019s (now Oracle\u2019s) Java is ubiquitous in today\u2019s computing environment.\u00a0 Unfortunately, as is often the case with widely installed software, it is a major target for attackers and malware writers.\u00a0 Add to this the fact that Java often has numerous security holes and you\u2019ve got a formula for mass infection.\u00a0 (Frankly, Java makes it very difficult to keep a computer secure.)
