{"id":6142,"date":"2019-10-04T11:09:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T15:09:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=6142"},"modified":"2019-10-18T09:14:00","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T13:14:00","slug":"its-recommendation-for-macos-10-15-catalina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2019\/10\/04\/its-recommendation-for-macos-10-15-catalina\/","title":{"rendered":"ITS Recommendation for macOS 10.15 Catalina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apple will release macOS 10.15 this month (October 2019) and is offering the operating system as a free upgrade on supported Apple hardware.\u00a0 New computers will ship with the new operating system this Fall.<\/p>\n<h3><b>ITS Recommendation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Information Technology Services (ITS) will support personally-owned macOS 10.15 devices on our network.\u00a0 \u00a0 However, <strong>be aware that <\/strong><b>Catalina no longer runs 32-bit programs.\u00a0 Upgrading may cause applications you rely on to stop working.<\/b>\u00a0 For more details on software, see \u201cCompatibility at Swarthmore\u201d below.<\/p>\n<p>At this point there are no plans to replace macOS 10.14 Mojave as the officially supported operating system on office and public area computers.\u00a0 <strong>Please do not attempt to upgrade any College-owned hardware to macOS 10.15<\/strong> without first consulting with ITS.<\/p>\n<p>ITS strongly recommends that College community members thinking about upgrading personal devices to macOS 10.15 Catalina also adopt a \u201cwait and see\u201d approach, continuing to use earlier supported versions of macOS until the initial bugs and compatibility issues are identified and fixed.<\/p>\n<h3><b>What is New in macOS 10.15 Catalina<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The latest versions of Apple\u2019s mobile (iOS) and desktop (macOS) software are taking steps to integrate their cross-functionality. \u00a0 Catalina allows desktops and laptops to run previously exclusive iPad apps, and includes the Screen Time app that was introduced on mobile devices earlier this year. \u00a0 Catalina also introduces Sidecar, which allows you to use an iPad as an external display for your Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Apple is also taking steps to increase security with macOS 10.15.\u00a0 \u00a0 The system volume in Catalina has been made \u201cread-only\u201d making it more difficult to infect or hack, and the process for granting apps access to your personal data in the new OS promises to be clearer and more transparent.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Compatibility at Swarthmore<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>macOS 10.15 Catalina will be supported on Swarthmore\u2019s network when it is released.\u00a0 SafeConnect and eduroam support the new operating system.<\/p>\n<p>Academic software has not yet been tested on the new OS, so <b>ITS does not guarantee that software we provide will work with macOS 10.15<\/b>.\u00a0 64-bit versions of most if not all academic software will eventually become available, but before testing we cannot guarantee software compatibility within the fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of this writing, 32-bit programs on our software page we already know do not run in macOS 10.15 include:<\/p>\n<p>Cinderella<br \/>\nCisco AnyConnect VPN<br \/>\nKaleidagraph<br \/>\nMathType<br \/>\nRead &amp; Write Gold<br \/>\nSPSS<\/p>\n<h4><b>For more information about features, visit Apple\u2019s Catalina webpage<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/macos\/catalina\/\">https:\/\/www.apple.com\/macos\/catalina\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Apple will release macOS 10.15 this month (October 2019) and is offering the operating system as a free upgrade on supported Apple hardware.\u00a0 New computers will ship with the new operating system this Fall.
