{"id":5991,"date":"2019-07-18T11:59:26","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T15:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=5991"},"modified":"2019-07-17T20:53:41","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T00:53:41","slug":"machine-learning-higher-education-and-bias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2019\/07\/18\/machine-learning-higher-education-and-bias\/","title":{"rendered":"Machine Learning, Higher Education, and Bias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week I am attending the <a href=\"https:\/\/conferences.oreilly.com\/oscon\/oscon-or\">Open Source Conference (OSCON)<\/a> and learning about all kinds of new open source software and projects.\u00a0 One of the popular new technologies being applied to many problems is machine learning, which is a technique used to extract meaning from data without explicitly programming the computer to follow certain pre-defined rules.\u00a0 Instead, the software intuits connections between data from the past to predict future outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Machine learning is being used to analyze data in higher education.\u00a0 For instance, Moodle has a built-in\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.moodle.org\/37\/en\/Analytics\">analytics tool<\/a>\u00a0that can make predictions such as whether a student will be likely to drop out of a class.\u00a0 The tool uses aggregated student data from past courses, including the<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0amount of interaction with activities in the class (Swarthmore has not activated this Moodle feature and has no plans to turn it on).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are lots of other places that can make use of machine learning.\u00a0 The Slate admissions service has a <a href=\"https:\/\/technolutions.com\/features\">module<\/a>\u00a0to predict which accepted students will ultimately end up enrolling in the college based on their application data.<\/p>\n<p>The appeal of these systems is that we can use the data already being collected about students to help us achieve better educational outcomes.\u00a0 We might get an early warning if a student might be struggling in a class or recommend courses of interest to a student.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main concerns about machine learning is that by training the software on past data, it can reinforce existing biases.\u00a0 One particularly egregious example of reinforced bias occurred when company designed a machine learning program to automatically review resumes with the goal of determining the best candidates for job openings.\u00a0 The existing employee pool may not have been particularly diverse because:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;
