W. Price, Technology Outreach Team Lead (JP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interviewer (I): Thanks for joining us, Joel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Thanks for having me!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: It says here you are a graduate of Swarthmore.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Yes, I graduated with a Psychology\/Education major (and elementary teaching certification) in 2000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Your title is a mouthful. \u00a0What is it that you *actually* do here?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: My job is to listen to folks around campus, then help ITS assess and predict the ways technology will impact our community, then help communicate with our community in meaningful ways. \u00a0It involves aspects of human-centered design, sensitivity toward different learning styles, and a semi-formal study of cognitive biases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: That&#8217;s not less of a mouthful. \u00a0Try again?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Ha! \u00a0Okay, I act as a &#8220;people person&#8221; for ITS and help communicate changes and identify little ways that things can go more smoothly. \u00a0I&#8217;m so grateful to work closely with Jess Stockett; she really has a knack for teaching, writing clear documentation, and understanding how things work from a deep-dive tech perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: That&#8217;s better. \u00a0Sheesh, maybe the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/writing\/writing-center\">Writing Center<\/a> could help you parse that first attempt better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: *Takes it under consideration then doesn&#8217;t*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Doesn&#8217;t what? \u00a0Take it under consideration or reach out to the Writing Center?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Exactly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: \u256f\u00b0\u25a1\u00b0\uff09\u256f\ufe35 \u253b\u2501\u253b<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Would you please describe your job here in haiku?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Listen to people<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication is key<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, be funny<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: That was way more straightforward than your first try above, but didn&#8217;t really factor in the preferred usage of nature as a theme in haiku. \u00a0Mind trying again?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Nature nature na-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-ture nature nature nature<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature more nature<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Just kidding. \u00a0Here you go:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IT buildings: four<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk between regularly<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enjoy time outside<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: I was really trying to set that up as a [questionable] segue: Speaking of nature, I&#8217;ve heard that you are a regular Instagrammer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Right. \u00a0I started taking photos of campus in February, 2013. \u00a0It became a consistent pattern! With the exception of one day, I&#8217;ve posted one photo per day on my feed <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/jfwp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@jfwp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: What happened that one day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: I ended up having an off-campus meeting that ran way long, and I forgot to take and post a picture that day. \u00a0It&#8217;s been a pretty good streak, though. I&#8217;ve benefited from the labeling of all plants on campus, and from the help of the kind folks over at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottarboretum.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott Arboretum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0In particular I&#8217;d like to thank <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/joshcoceano\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@joshcoceano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for all of his help in identifying plants and teaching me more about the beauty that surrounds. \u00a0I&#8217;d say I probably have an accidental sub-sub-minor in botany, but Josh probably wouldn&#8217;t agree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: We just asked him. \u00a0He laughed, and said no, you are not even close to a sub-sub-minor in botany.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: <\/span><b>\u256f\u00b0\u25a1\u00b0\uff09\u256f\ufe35 \u253b\u2501\u253b<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: As everything tech-wise has changed so much, what is the one thing you wish you could let folks know to make things easier?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: Sure: reach out to us to let us know where you are (step A) and where you&#8217;d like to go (step Z) &#8212; don&#8217;t get caught up with the technology concerns in steps B-Y! \u00a0Everyone in ITS likes to help, and sometimes we can really help &#8220;unstick&#8221; folks in those middle points. You all do the amazing work of conceptualizing and following through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Something we ask everyone on here is to tell us two truths and a lie (in any order):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JP: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1: I have traveled to all fifty states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2: I have a sub-sub-minor in botany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3: I have ticket stubs from over 400 concerts I&#8217;ve attended arranged chronologically in binders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Didn&#8217;t we go over this already? \u00a0YOU DO NOT HAVE A SUB-SUB-MINOR IN BOTANY. \u00a0WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?
