{"id":5709,"date":"2019-03-21T12:00:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T16:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=5709"},"modified":"2019-03-25T16:24:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T20:24:59","slug":"who-is-that-series-introducing-ashley-turner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2019\/03\/21\/who-is-that-series-introducing-ashley-turner\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cWho Is That?\u201d Series: Introducing Ashley Turner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cWho Is That?\u201d series gives you insight into who we are here in the ITS department with a series of traditional and non-traditional interview questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrapping up: From our last post with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2019\/01\/18\/who-is-that-series-introducing-corrine-schoeb\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corrine Schoeb, Technology Accessibility Coordinator, she lied to us about the likelihood that you, the reader, suffers from a disability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we chat with Ashley Turner (AT), Academic Technologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviewer [I]: Thanks for joining us, Ashley! \u00a0Did you pick this job because it matches your initials?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: Not exactly&#8230;but it\u2019s a big plus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: Kind of like Switzerland&#8217;s flag?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: \ud83d\ude44<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: You had another position at Swarthmore before this &#8212; what was it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: I was still in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/swarthmore.edu\/its\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but worked as a Media Services Specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: In which ways do your past experiences in Media Services influence your work as an Academic Technologist?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: As a Media Services Specialist I got to go inside the classrooms and see firsthand what some of the pain points were for faculty. I got to know a lot of the faculty and students that way. \u00a0The relationships I built in my previous role certainly influence my current role tremendously because I know how some of the faculty operate their classrooms and what their needs are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: Would you please describe your Academic Technology job and your Media Services job in two separate haiku?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: Moodle all the time<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping learners learn better<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blended learning helps<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: Well done on the haiku portion of that question! \u00a0The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/writing\/writing-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would be proud! \u00a0However, might we suggest brushing up with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/math-stat-academic-support\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Math &amp; Stat Academic Support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> folks? \u00a0Seems that counting to two haiku might have been an unintentionally difficult question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: What do you think has changed the most about the way ITS in higher education works in the past five years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: I think technology changes quicker than it did even five years ago and because of that its \u00a0adoption rate is much quicker too. The use of technology affords us so many conveniences, it\u2019s hard not to want to use the latest app, tool, or technology that will help shave five minutes from your workflow or help organize your work more efficiently. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: Please tell us two truths and a lie (in any order)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used to be an actress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I once was offered a record deal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was named after a character on a soap opera<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: What are your work goals for 2019?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: My goals for 2019 are to provide quality faculty development opportunities <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that enhance teaching, learning, and research objectives of faculty on campus. Offering workshops on blended learning and active learning techniques allow for exploration of new methods of doing things. It is my goal to create learning communities around such methods so that faculty can learn and grow from each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: What bigger-picture issues are you most involved with here at Swarthmore?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: I am involved in our interactive teaching for flexible learning spaces initiative. Providing flexible spaces that better support interactive group activity is important for student success. It\u2019s my goal to figure out ways in how we can better support faculty in this endeavor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I: Is there anything you&#8217;d like to share about yourself that we wouldn&#8217;t know to ask?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AT: I am a career changer. Before coming to Swarthmore almost six years ago I was an audio engineer for a local theatre company. \u00a0I decided to switch careers and get into higher education technology and I\u2019ve loved it ever since!
