{"id":5470,"date":"2018-12-03T12:28:58","date_gmt":"2018-12-03T17:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=5470"},"modified":"2018-12-03T12:28:58","modified_gmt":"2018-12-03T17:28:58","slug":"4-moodle-gradebook-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2018\/12\/03\/4-moodle-gradebook-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Moodle Gradebook Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More faculty are using the Moodle gradebook to keep track of assignments, exams, and other assessments.\u00a0 Moodle is very configurable and can be adapted to almost any grading format.\u00a0 The user interface isn&#8217;t always intuitive, so here are four tips to get the most out of Moodle.<\/p>\n<h1>Set up the gradebook to match your syllabus<\/h1>\n<p>Moodle can be set up with categories, grade items, and weighting to match the course syllabus.\u00a0 For example, a course might have three papers worth 60% of the grade, a midterm and final exam worth a total of 30%, and class participation worth 10%.\u00a0 You can set up categories for the papers and the exams and a grade item for the class participation.\u00a0 Enter the appropriate weights for each type of assessment.\u00a0 Then add grade items for the exams.\u00a0 Create assignments for the papers to allow students to upload their papers to Moodle and add them to the Papers category.\u00a0 See below for the sample grade setup.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5473\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5473\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/moodle_gradebook_example-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5473\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/moodle_gradebook_example-1-300x282.png\" alt=\"A Moodle gradebook example setup with 3 papers with a weight of 60, 2 exams with a total weight of 30, and class participation weight of 10. Click for a larger view.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As shown, each exam is worth the same.\u00a0 To make the final exam worth more than the midterm, adjust the weighting for each.<\/p>\n<p>To get to the gradebook setup, click on Grades (left menu) \u2192 Setup tab.<\/p>\n<h1>Use the assignment and quiz grading pages<\/h1>\n<p>Moodle has a number of activities such as assignments and quizzes that make it possible to do online grading.\u00a0 For these activities, use the grading feature within the activity itself instead of entering the grades in the gradebook directly.\u00a0 For example, when collecting papers for a Moodle assignment, click on the &#8220;View all submissions&#8221; link in the assignment and grade the papers using the Assignment grade view.\u00a0 If grades are entered directly in the gradebook, they are considered an override grade and will lock out any changes from being made in the assignment activity.<\/p>\n<h1>Make grades visible to students<\/h1>\n<p>Students appreciate being able to see where they stand in a class.\u00a0 To make grades visible to students, go to your Moodle course and click on the Gear Icon (top right of page) \u2192 Edit settings.
