{"id":5292,"date":"2018-09-20T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T16:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=5292"},"modified":"2018-09-17T14:51:27","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T18:51:27","slug":"who-is-that-series-introducing-oliver-hollocher-small","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2018\/09\/20\/who-is-that-series-introducing-oliver-hollocher-small\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Who Is That?&#8221; Series: Introducing Oliver Hollocher-Small"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cWho Is That?\u201d series gives you insight into who we are here in the ITS department with a series of traditional and non-traditional interview questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrapping up: From our last post with Jess Stockett, she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2018\/04\/09\/who-is-that-series-introducing-jess-stockett\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lied to us about having dyed her hair pink in college<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we sit down with Technical Support Specialist Oliver Hollocher-Small (OHS). \u00a0And by sit down we mean &#8220;shared a Google Doc together and literally didn&#8217;t speak a word to one another about it.&#8221; \u00a0Mostly kidding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interviewer [I]: Oliver, do you have nicknames you&#8217;d be willing to share? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: Certainly, I have obtained a few nicknames over the years, currently it is one of &#8220;O&#8221; or &#8220;Olly.&#8221; \u00a0Most of my childhood it was \u201cWoods\u201d because if you had to find me, it would probably be in the woods. Nowadays a few folks here call me &#8220;Schmedium.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Really? Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: I don&#8217;t know, actually. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2018\/01\/29\/who-is-that-series-introducing-aixa-pomales\/\">Ask Aixa<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Have you ever been called &#8220;Biggie&#8221; or &#8220;Ol-Holl-Small?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: Funny! \u00a0Yes to \u201cBiggie\u201d in elementary school a classmate would call me that and for a short time and thought I was related because of my last name despite missing the \u201cs\u201d at the end. \u00a0Although, we look a lot alike \ud83d\ude09 &#8212; Not to the other one but the syllables match \u201clions, tigers and bears\u201d so I would get that sometimes, oh my!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: When did you start at Swarthmore? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: July 21st 2013. \u00a0WOW 5 years!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: I read that as &#8220;wowsers.&#8221; \u00a0I suppose that works.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I: I&#8217;ve heard a rumor that each person on the Help Desk team has a set of &#8220;superpowers&#8221; that they lend to the team. \u00a0Is that true?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: Maybe\u2026Have you ever watched the cartoon Captain Planet? [I: No]. \u00a0Kinda like that but more of an access-to-different-systems-type thing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Hm, so basically if I haven&#8217;t seen Captain Planet then the simile is lost on me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: Was that simile, or metaphor?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Simile, I think. \u00a0But perhaps we should consult with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/writing\/writing-center\">Writing Center<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I: So what are your superpowers?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: Unprofessional answer: All your data are belong to us. \u00a0(earlier <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All_your_base_are_belong_to_us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internet meme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but replace &#8220;data&#8221; with &#8220;base&#8221;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional answer: I&#8217;m calm under pressure and and I can deal well with ambiguities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: You&#8217;re big on this &#8220;It&#8217;s almost just like this random thing you may or may not know about,&#8221; it seems.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: Yep. \u00a0How I roll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Okay. Tell the people what they want to hear (and what they want to hear is what your job is&#8230;using only haiku): \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OHS: I am on my way<br \/>\nYour computer is working<br \/>\nCoffee is ready<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I never wrote haikus on purpose, I was consulting with Jeff O. on this one. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: In a future post, maybe I will specifically ask him to describe his job without that poetic crutch, then.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Has working at the Help Desk changed over the time you&#8217;ve been here? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: Very much so. \u00a0By meeting an eclectic community I have made great connections with faculty, staff, and students. \u00a0Working here in general feels like being in College again, where I am always learning. It&#8217;s always a fun challenge to stay ahead of the curve with technology. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: What is the funniest thing tech-wise you&#8217;ve been asked (only a non-Swarthmore story, please)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: \u201cWhy is my phone on airplane mode? \u00a0I\u2019ve never been on an airplane!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I: Anyone who has visited your corner of the Help Desk knows that you like plants. \u00a0What&#8217;s the backstory?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: I started by trying to beautify the space. \u00a0At first I had a wagon there filled with broken and spare computer parts, so I started small by replacing it with a cabinet and with one plant. \u00a0Gradually, students asked me if I could take care of theirs as they traveled abroad or graduated. So I have now transitioned to (happily) volunteering to be a plant foster home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Please list two truths and a lie (not necessarily in that order!) \u2014 we\u2019ll reveal the answer on the next blog post.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: I went to college during high school, I can do a backflip, I can eat two large pizzas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I: Imagine that everyone at Swarthmore is reading this &#8212; what&#8217;s your number one tech tip you wish you could tell them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHS: This is the most boring AND the most important tip! \u00a0Make sure you back up your stuff.
