{"id":5262,"date":"2018-09-13T12:00:42","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T16:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=5262"},"modified":"2018-09-11T10:53:16","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T14:53:16","slug":"gmails-new-look-an-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2018\/09\/13\/gmails-new-look-an-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Gmail&#8217;s New Look &#8211; An Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in June we let the community know that Google would be updating the look and feel of Gmail to better match Calendar, Drive, and their mobile applications. For a refresher on some of the new features you can expect, you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2018\/06\/11\/gmail-is-getting-an-upgrade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take a look through our June blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Gmail look was in testing so there was no announced release date before, but we can now let everyone know when to expect to see changes to their Gmail to take effect. As of August 21st everyone at Swarthmore was given the ability to opt in to the new Gmail. You may have seen the option to &#8220;Try the new Swarthmore.edu Mail&#8221; listed under the Settings icon in your Gmail. If you\u2019ve already chosen to switch over &#8211; great! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have not yet tried it out, we encourage you to do so. As of <\/span><b>September 18th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> users will start to automatically get switched over to the new Gmail. At this point everyone will still have the option to &#8220;Go back to classic Swarthmore.edu Mail\u201d under the Settings icon.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of <\/span><b>October 16th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Google will begin fully transitioning <\/span><b>all<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> users over to the new Gmail interface and you will lose the option to opt out at this time. This is why we highly suggest you switch over early and check it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Similar features that will be available with the new Gmail interface are now popping up on other Google apps such as Calendar and Docs, Sheets, and Slides &#8211; so some of it may already look familiar to you when you make the switch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5138\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5138\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5138\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Google_AppsLancher_Contacts2-252x300.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of the Google App Launcher with nine apps shown. After the Gmail switch, it will be necessary to get to your contacts this way.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just as a reminder, Contacts will no longer be found within Gmail once you switch over to the new interface. Contacts is currently its own Google app and can be accessed from the App Launcher within any Google application.
