{"id":4773,"date":"2018-02-14T17:02:04","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T21:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=4773"},"modified":"2018-02-14T17:02:46","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T21:02:46","slug":"could-learning-analytics-work-at-swarthmore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2018\/02\/14\/could-learning-analytics-work-at-swarthmore\/","title":{"rendered":"Could Learning Analytics work at Swarthmore?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Learning Analytics is the term academic technologists use for\u00a0using student data to help with teaching and learning.\u00a0 Some schools have started collecting student\u00a0information from a variety of sources and using it to alert faculty\u00a0about potential problems.\u00a0 The data can come from learning management system activity (Moodle), clicker responses, online homework results,\u00a0admissions data (grades, test scores, etc), transcript data (related courses, grades), or class and help session attendance.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a first year student student\u00a0with lower-than-average high school GPA\u00a0and SAT scores that hasn&#8217;t logged into Moodle for 2 weeks and is late submitting an assignment, might benefit from a discussion with his or her professor before an exam.<\/p>\n<p>EDUCAUSE, the higher-education information technology organization, has put out\u00a0a two page summary\u00a0 called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.educause.edu\/~\/media\/files\/library\/2017\/7\/eli7146.pdf\">7 Things You Should Know About Developments in Learning Analytics<\/a>, which is a quick read if you&#8217;d like to learn more about the topic.<\/p>\n<p>At big schools, much of the focus for these types of tools has been on student retention.\u00a0 At Swarthmore, where student retention is high, we&#8217;ve\u00a0discussed\u00a0if there are other areas that could benefit from analysis of student data.\u00a0 Our conclusion has been that\u00a0smaller class sizes, the &#8220;big brother&#8221;
