Project Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SPEED awards from ITS and the Libraries provide dedicated support from software developers, librarians, academic technologists, and student interns for an eight-week period of project development. \u00a0Our four SPEED student interns have\u00a0made great progress on their projects and we are excited to provide updates on their progress.<\/p>\n<p><a (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Nicki Feldbaum &#8217;19 has been learning the <a href=\"https:\/\/d3js.org\/\">D3 Javascript graphics library<\/a> to\u00a0design interactive visualizations to show relationships between novels as part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rachelsagnerbuurma.org\/\">English Literature Professor Rachel Buurma&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/earlynovels.github.io\/\">Early Novels Database project<\/a>. \u00a0 Nabil Kashyap, Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Scholarship, has been coordinating the work as well as providing insight into creating effective representations of data for the entire group. \u00a0Nicki&#8217;s extensive coursework in computer science and background in design has been useful as she figures out how to represent complex relationships in intuitive ways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/openscad.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3156 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/openscad-300x157.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of OpenJSCAD program\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a>Working with Mathematics Professor Elizabeth Drellich, Kate Collins &#8217;18 has delved into 3D mathematical design to create representations of shapes from abstract algebra. \u00a0Fortunately Kate has experience with both\u00a0mathematics and computer science as she combines web programming, abstract\u00a0algebra, and 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) to put together a website that will let users design algebraic models, view the 3D models in the site, and then download them for\u00a03D printing. \u00a0The project will rely on the open source tools <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagemath.org\/\">SageMath<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openscad.org\/\">OpenSCAD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/roadmap.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3159 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/roadmap-300x169.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of proposed Raodmap website with HTML code \" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>Having a strong background in design has been useful for David Molina Cavazos &#8217;20 as he implements a website to help students navigate the curriculum and see the academic and career possibilities\u00a0within each major. \u00a0Coordinated by Academic Technologist Ashley Turner, the project is the result of collaboration between Assistant Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/profile\/liz-derickson-01\">Liz Derickson<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/profile\/erin-massey\">Erin Massey<\/a>, the Associate Director of Client Services. \u00a0David has been working on ways of clearly\u00a0representing a variety of data including career choices and student narratives. \u00a0Starting in Photoshop to mock up a design, David has now started building the actual site\u00a0using <a href=\"http:\/\/getbootstrap.com\/\">Bootstrap<\/a>, a popular framework for web design that ensures that the pages will work well on both desktop and mobile browsers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/vanuatu.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3160 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/vanuatu-300x209.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of a map of Vanuatu with a pop up window showing an image from the island\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a>Taking audio recordings, videos, photos, and textual data from the Pacific island of Vanuatu collected by Linguistics Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/SocSci\/dharris2\/\">David Harrison<\/a> and\u00a0Jeremy Fahringer,\u00a0Cassandra Stone &#8217;20 is\u00a0programming a map interface to show the locations where the data was collected. \u00a0With\u00a0prior experience\u00a0both as a designer and programmer, Cassandra first studied GIS (geographic information systems) and then began to implement the interactive map using <a href=\"http:\/\/leafletjs.com\/\">Leaflet<\/a>, a Javascript mapping library. \u00a0Academic Technologist Doug Willen and Roberto Vargas, the Research Librarian for Humanities &amp; Interdisciplinary Studies, have been coordinating and lending their mapping\u00a0expertise to the project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPEED awards from ITS and the
