and your investment in it.\u00a0 These are particularly important if you access any College or personal data with your device.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Use an alphanumeric passcode<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>iPads and iPhones can actually encrypt the data they contain!\u00a0 However, to utilize this capability, a passcode has to be set.\u00a0 Although a four-digit passcode will minimally suffice (there\u2019s software available to easily crack these), the best option is to enable the use of alphanumeric passcodes.\u00a0 This is done by going into Settings and then selecting General in the Settings list.\u00a0 Touch the \u2018Passcode Lock\u2019 item in the right hand column.<\/p>\n<p>If the Passcode Lock is not yet enabled, select the \u2018Turn Passcode On\u2019 option and set a passcode.\u00a0 Then, next to \u2018Simple Passcode\u2019, select Off.\u00a0 You will need to enter your existing passcode and then you will be presented with a keyboard to enter a new alphanumeric passcode (be sure to also save it somewhere safe in case you forget it).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Passcodes1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1321\" title=\"Passcodes\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Passcodes1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Passcodes1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Passcodes1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Passcodes1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Passcodes1-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>Once enabled, whenever you turn your iDevice on, you\u2019ll need to enter your passcode to access it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Enable the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">free<\/span> device locator with the &#8220;Find My iPhone&#8221; app<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a great free app\/service that allows you to locate your missing iDevice if misplaced or stolen.\u00a0 In addition to showing where your device is on a Google map, you can also remotely lock the device, play a sound, display a message or even wipe all of its data.\u00a0 (note that Location Services, in Settings, does need to be enabled for this to work, see below)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/LocationServices.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1324\" title=\"LocationServices\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/LocationServices.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/LocationServices.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/LocationServices-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/LocationServices-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/LocationServices-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>Start by going to the AppStore and downloading the &#8220;Find My iPhone&#8221; app (it works for iPod and iPad too).\u00a0 After installing the app and starting it, you will be asked for your Apple ID and password (see below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/findmyiphone-loginb1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1972\" title=\"findmyiphone login\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/findmyiphone-loginb1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you log in, your application will begin locating your iDevice and you can view its location on a Google map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/findmyiphone-map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1969\" title=\"findmyiphone map\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/findmyiphone-map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once your device is located, you can have it play a sound (great if you misplace it in a home or building), display a message and even wipe its contents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/findmyiphone-deviceb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1971\" title=\"findmyiphone deviceb\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/findmyiphone-deviceb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now if you should unfortunately lose or misplace your iDevice, you can run the Find My iPhone app on a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">different<\/span> iDevice, log in with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">your<\/span> Apple ID and you should be able to locate your lost iDevice along with the option of taking additional actions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Encrypt your iTunes backups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re already backing up your device to your Mac or PC.\u00a0 However, that data may often include sensitive or personal information.\u00a0 The backup will also contain login credentials for apps, websites, email and even VPN.\u00a0 In many cases, this data can be extracted from the backup files.\u00a0 To avoid this, you should encrypt your backup files.\u00a0 This is done automatically for you every time you backup via iTunes.\u00a0 Within iTunes, and with your device connected to your computer, locate the options for the device (see below) and click on \u2018Encrypt iPad backup\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screenshot.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1327\" title=\"Screenshot\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screenshot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"830\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screenshot.png 830w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screenshot-300x241.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screenshot-768x618.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screenshot-75x60.png 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/a>Following these quick three steps will go a long way to protect your iDevice and the data on it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are three easy actions you can take to immensely enhance the data protection capabilities of your &#8220;iDevice&#8221;
