{"id":10563,"date":"2026-08-31T08:27:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T12:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=10563"},"modified":"2026-08-26T19:29:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T23:29:23","slug":"explore-make-and-create-join-the-its-learning-spaces-tour-open-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2026\/08\/31\/explore-make-and-create-join-the-its-learning-spaces-tour-open-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Explore, Make, and Create: Join the ITS Learning Spaces Tour + Open House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Have you ever wondered what you can create in the MakerSpace, how to get started with podcasting, or where to try virtual reality on campus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, September 4, from 1:00\u20134:00 p.m., ITS invites students, faculty, and staff to join us for a Learning Spaces Tour + Open House and discover some of the spaces, tools, and people available to support making, learning, and creating at Swarthmore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event has two parts: we\u2019ll start with a guided walking tour of ITS learning spaces across campus, followed by an open house where you can drop in to the spaces that interest you most for hands-on activities, demonstrations, and conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along the way, you\u2019ll discover resources for photography, video, podcasting, music production, virtual reality, gaming, 3D printing, laser cutting, woodworking, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start with the Learning Spaces Tour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1:00\u20132:00 p.m.<br>Meet at Martin Hall 130 \u2014 Creative Media Commons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll begin at the new Creative Media Commons in Martin Hall and make our way through several ITS learning spaces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Martin Hall 130 \u2014 Creative Media Commons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Martin Hall 133 \u2014 Audio Editing Suite + Podcast Studio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Martin Hall 135 \u2014 Video Editing Suite 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Martin Hall 137 \u2014 Video Editing Suite 2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Martin Hall 138 \u2014 Film Equipment Checkout Room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kohlberg Hall 326 \u2014 Language Center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whittier Hall 114 \u2014 MakerSpace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At each stop, you\u2019ll get a quick introduction to the space, learn about available tools and resources, and meet ITS staff who can help you get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay for the Hands-On Open House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>2:15\u20134:00 p.m. | Drop-in Activities + Mingling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the tour, choose your own path and return to the spaces that interest you most. Activities will happen concurrently, so you can drop in, try something, ask questions, mingle, and move between spaces at your own pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drop-in Activities starting at 2:15 p.m.:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make &amp; Take: Create a Laser-Cut Coaster<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/makerspace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MakerSpace<\/a> in Whittier Hall 114 to see the laser cutter in action and learn how a digital design becomes a physical object. Select or customize a simple design and leave with a coaster you helped create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take Better Photos with Natural Light<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/language-center-and-creative-media-commons\/creative-media-commons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creative Media Commons<\/a> in Martin Hall 130 to experiment with simple ways to use natural light in your photography. Bring your smartphone or camera, or try one of the DSLR cameras available during the activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intro to Virtual Reality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Head to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/language-center-and-creative-media-commons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Language Center<\/a> in Kohlberg Hall 326 for a hands-on introduction to Meta Quest 3 headsets. Learn the basics of navigating a virtual environment and explore VR applications at your own pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Come Explore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No previous experience is needed.
