In collaboration with our partners in digital scholarship in the libraries<\/a>, we have added additional extended reality (XR) devices in the Language Center<\/a> as a result of growing interest in use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. Starting this fall we will provide access to several Meta Quest 3 devices for drop-in use through the week. Days and hours for drop-in access to be announced closer to the start of the semester. We will begin with an introductory library of applications that will grow with use. Reach out to us at lmc@swarthmore.edu<\/a> if you are looking for a particular application for course or research use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also continue to provide access to an Oculus Rift VR system for some applications whose hardware requirements require that platform. Use of the Oculus Rift will not be available for drop-in access and use is by appointment only. Email lmc@swarthmore.edu<\/a> for inquires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, we invite those interested in capturing 360 video and still images to contact us for inquiries regarding our Ricoh Theta 360 camera. It is a great tool for capturing spaces and, in conjunction with VR headsets, providing others with an immersive experience of place. Past course use with the camera has integrated 360 photos and video recordings of locations and spaces tied to course studies. Photos and videos have been added to headsets through which students can fully enter a “cinematic” experience of a location associated with their course. Prompts for critical assessment of the location, objects, and features within the location, and the differences between past descriptions of a space and a contemporary analysis, can provide students with a richer experience of place, prompt critical discussions, and compliment their studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
