{"id":10104,"date":"2025-12-11T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/?p=10104"},"modified":"2025-12-10T17:57:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T22:57:15","slug":"firebird-2025-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2025\/12\/11\/firebird-2025-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Firebird: 2025 in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swatkb.atlassian.net\/wiki\/spaces\/ACADTECH\/pages\/161546272\/Firebird+Computing+Cluster\">Firebird<\/a>, Swarthmore&#8217;s high-performance computing (HPC) cluster, is completing its first full calendar year in service, and what a year it&#8217;s been! In 2025, the user communities from both Swarthmore and Lafayette College collectively ran more than 459,000 jobs, totaling over 10,374,000 CPU hours (that&#8217;s more than 1,184 <em>years<\/em>). We enhanced the cluster&#8217;s capabilities, including expanding the memory on the login node and adding a high-memory node, a compute node, and a new GPU node with RTX6000 Blackwell GPUs. Firebird also contributed about <a href=\"https:\/\/ce-dashboard.ospool.osg-htc.org\/overview.html?host=swarthmore-firebird-ce1.svc.osg-htc.org&amp;r=month\">3,000,000 CPU hours to public science<\/a>, through participation in the <a href=\"https:\/\/osg-htc.org\/services\/ospool\/\">OSPool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking forward, 2026 promises to be another productive year. In particular, we are focusing on improving Firebird&#8217;s storage capacity and organization. We&#8217;re also planning to make <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/its\/2025\/10\/09\/globus-now-available-for-use-with-firebird\/\">Globus<\/a> more widely available to manage larger-scale data transfers to\/from AWS S3 collections, Google Drive, Firebird, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re hoping to see Firebird used in additional courses and by students for various projects.
