{"id":972,"date":"2012-07-16T17:35:38","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T17:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/?p=972"},"modified":"2023-09-13T15:41:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T15:41:14","slug":"the-importance-of-ipeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/?p=972","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of IPEDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ipeds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-973\" title=\"ipeds\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ipeds-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"IPEDS Form\" width=\"277\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ipeds-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ipeds.jpg 574w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/a>The IR responsibility of providing summary data to the federal government through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) sounds like as much fun as completing tax forms.\u00a0\u00a0 And as a matter of fact that analogy pretty much captures it!\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s an obligation of all institutions that participate in any kind of Title IV funding programs (federal student financial aid), which means that like death and taxes, it affects just about all of us.\u00a0 Assembling and providing this information is not always easy, but it&#8217;s a responsibility that we take very seriously, and we do our best to work effectively with our colleagues internally so that we provide the most accurate data possible.<\/p>\n<p>I recently attended a workshop to become a &#8220;trainer&#8221; for IPEDS.\u00a0 The <a title=\"Association for Institutional Research\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airweb.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association for Institutional Research<\/a> (AIR) works with the <a title=\"National Center for Education Statistics\" href=\"http:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Center for Educational Statistics<\/a> (NCES) to <a title=\"AIR Training for IPEDS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airweb.org\/EducationAndEvents\/IPEDSTraining\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provide training and support<\/a> for both submitting data and using the data that NCES makes available to the public.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s a really wonderful program of online tutorials, face-to-face workshops, and other activities that promote understanding of this important resource, and I&#8217;m excited about being involved.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always been a girl scout about this stuff anyway, but the workshop reinforced just how valuable and PUBLIC! a resource this is.\u00a0 Once submitted (and after the agency&#8217;s review and consistency checking) this information becomes available to the public through the IPEDS Data Center.\u00a0\u00a0 That means that <em><strong>anyone<\/strong><\/em> can use it &#8230;and they do!
