{"id":956,"date":"2012-06-03T17:20:16","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T17:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/?p=956"},"modified":"2023-09-13T15:41:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T15:41:14","slug":"telling-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/?p=956","title":{"rendered":"Telling Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-961\" title=\"books\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Storybooks on a shelf\" width=\"189\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a>Last week I participated in a workshop sponsored jointly by the Center for Digital Storytelling (<a title=\"Center for Digital Storytelling\" href=\"http:\/\/www.storycenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDS<\/a>) and Swarthmore College.\u00a0 It was an intense three-day experience, in which about a dozen participants were taught the basics of constructing an effective narrative using images, music, and voice.\u00a0\u00a0 The folks from CDS (Andrea Spagat, Lisa Nelson-Haynes) were just wonderful &#8211; skilled, patient, experienced &#8211; as were our <a title=\"Swarthmore College Information Technology Services (ITS)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swarthmore.edu\/its.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ITS<\/a> staff members who supported the workshop (Doug Willens, Michael Jones, and Eric Behrens).<\/p>\n<p>I had wanted to learn more about this technology to see if it might be a useful way for IR to share information with the community.\u00a0 I can envision short, focused instructional vignettes, such as tips on constructing surveys, everyday assessment techniques, or even how to interpret a particular factbook table that is vexing.\u00a0\u00a0 (Generally, a table that requires instructions ought to be thrown out!)\u00a0\u00a0 We may try one of these and see how it goes.<\/p>\n<p>I learned about the technology, but I also learned some amazing stories about my Swarthmore colleagues who participated with me.\u00a0\u00a0 These stories often reflect important personal experiences, which could have been difficult to share if it weren&#8217;t such a supportive environment.\u00a0 An unexpected outcome of the workshop is that a group of colleagues all got to know each other a lot better!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I participated in a workshop sponsored jointly by the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS) and Swarthmore College.\u00a0 It was an intense three-day experience, in which about a dozen participants were taught the basics of constructing an effective narrative using images, music, and voice.\u00a0\u00a0 The folks from CDS (Andrea Spagat, Lisa Nelson-Haynes) were just &hellip;
