{"id":619,"date":"2011-10-31T21:00:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-31T21:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/?p=619"},"modified":"2023-09-13T15:41:15","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T15:41:15","slug":"the-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/?p=619","title":{"rendered":"The End"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-628\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/drb62\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-628\" title=\"goalposts\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/institutional-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/goalposts.jpg\" alt=\"Goal posts\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by DB-2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Begin with the end in mind&#8221; is Stephen Covey advice I&#8217;ve always found useful.\u00a0 Some people ask what you would want to have written on your tombstone.\u00a0 (Writing this post on Halloween may be influencing my choice of images here!) \u00a0 But in making many decisions I&#8217;ve found it helpful to think about what path I might wish I had chosen if I looked backwards from the future.\u00a0 Many of us wrote &#8220;Histories of the Future&#8221; as part of our thinking about Swarthmore&#8217;s <a title=\"Swarthmore College Strategic Planning\" href=\"http:\/\/sp.swarthmore.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategic planning<\/a>.\u00a0 Envisioning what you would like to see is a way of thinking through and clarifying your goals and what you might need to do to get to them.<\/p>\n<p>Good assessment takes the same first step.\u00a0 Rather than thinking about what things you could most easily measure, or how to prove the worth of your activities to an external audience, you start by articulating what results you would like your activity to achieve.\u00a0 What are the key things that I want my students to have learned when they finish this course?
