But I think progressives of other flavors–social democrats, Marxists, communalists, what have you– have a similarly difficult time bending their head around this point for other reasons.

Because they’re mostly neoliberals who assume that a deep technocratic consensus is always possible, that’s why! (An unfair accusation, I realize, but not one without some real, truthful relevance to the left-liberal-neoliberal discussion of the week before last, I think.)
