Rise of Nations was an RTS, right, designed by Brian Reynolds? I tend to avoid those unless I feel a real need to see what’s going on with a particular design or feature in one.

I also wasn't impressed with Civ III (after a long history of Civ I/II addiction). However, have you tried Rise of Nations: Thrones And Patriots?

Argh, The pain! I just got a Powerbook, my PC is at home…I’m going to have to wait a whole handful of months to get this game. *weeps*

And while Civ III had its issues, it was still incredibly addicting, and (imo) generally quite entertaining.
