{"id":4811,"date":"2013-03-04T17:01:54","date_gmt":"2013-03-04T17:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/?p=4811"},"modified":"2024-04-22T14:39:42","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T18:39:42","slug":"bryn-mawr-arts-series-featuring-sheetal-gandhi-contemporary-choreography-from-the-indian-diaspora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/theater\/2013\/03\/04\/bryn-mawr-arts-series-featuring-sheetal-gandhi-contemporary-choreography-from-the-indian-diaspora\/","title":{"rendered":"Bryn Mawr Arts Series featuring Sheetal Gandhi (Contemporary choreography from the Indian diaspora&#8230;)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><b>Bryn Mawr College Performing Arts Series Closes 2012-2013 Season with Tour-De-Force Performance by Sheetal Gandhi on March 22<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><i>Final performance caps season of virtuosic and adventurous works in the arts<\/i><\/p>\n<p>BRYN MAWR, PA \u2013 February 27, 2013 \u2013 The 2012-2013 season of the <b>Bryn Mawr College Performing Arts Series<\/b> concludes <b>Friday, March 22<\/b> with <b><i>Bahu-Beti-Biwi, <\/i><\/b>a solo performance by intercultural, multi-disciplinary director, choreographer and performer <b>Sheetal Gandhi.<\/b> Reviewed as \u201cstriking\u201d and \u201cstunning\u201d in <i>The Philadelphia Inquirer, <\/i>Gandhi incorporates elements of contemporary and traditional dance, dramatic multi-lingual vocalizations and percussive text to comment on the Indian diaspora and the traditional roles of women in India.<\/p>\n<p>In <i>Bahu<\/i><i>-Beti-Biwi, <\/i>which translates to <i>Daughter-in-law, Daughter, Wife<\/i>, movement and music create the transition between characters inspired by women from Gandhi\u2019s life. The piece is influenced by North Indian musical traditions that are brought into a contemporary context. Humor and tension create a platform for scenes of freedom and compromise, desire and longing, duty and love. Gandhi has performed the work around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBryn Mawr, an all-women\u2019s college, looks forward to presenting Sheetal Gandhi\u2019s important take on the changing roles of women. Gandhi is a mesmerizing performer who both entertains and addresses challenging issues,\u201d says <b>Lisa Kraus<\/b>, Coordinator of the Bryn Mawr College Performing Arts Series.<\/p>\n<p><b>Thursday March 21<br \/>\n<\/b>&#8211; 4-5:30 pm <b>Master Class: Sheetal Ghandi<\/b> (this is the time we traditionally use for this, as a class meets at this hour)<em> &#8211; Pem Studio<\/em><b><br \/>\nContemporary Kathak <\/b>class which specifically focuses on learning the rhythms and the rhythmic cycles used in North Indian classical music, some technique from this form, and then a short traditional piece.\u00a0 I show them how I translate the piece into a more contemporary language, and they learn this as well. \u00a0It is a speaking\/dancing class. \u00a0I do this most often with students coming from a dance background. The rhythms can be learned by anyone, but when we get into the real choreography of it, it is better if they have some dance background.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 7pm <b>Lecture-demonstration<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0 Aspects of\u00a0 Ms. Gandhi&#8217;s experience moving from traditional forms and developing into a multi-disciplinary artist who works in a variety of theatrical contexts (possibly including screening of video clips).<br \/>\n<b><br \/>\nFriday, March 22<\/b><br \/>\n-12-1:30 &#8211; <b>Lunch<\/b> in the <em>Dorothy Vernon Room at Bryn Mawr<\/em> for students of South Asian Women&#8217;s club and anyone interested in an informal meeting and discussion<\/p>\n<p>-8 pm <b>Performance: <\/b><i><b>Bahu Beti Biwi <\/b><\/i>&#8211; <em>on McPherson Stage<\/em><br \/>\n<b><br \/>\nSaturday March 23<\/b><br \/>\n-10:30 -12:00 am <b>Community Class in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Bollywood Dance<\/span><\/b> (children and adults) &#8211; <em>on McPherson Stage<\/em><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small\">Burn off steam in the contagiously fun fusion style of dance that is called, \u201cBollywood Dance\u201d.\u00a0 Each class offers an injury-preventative warm-up of body isolations, integrated with stretching and preparatory technical exercises for Indian dance movement.\u00a0 Participants will:<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small\">learn traditional Indian styles based on both folk and classical\u00a0forms<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small\">learn important story-telling skills through dance<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small\">learn\u00a0choreography to popular Bollywood and Bhangra songs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>-12:30 &#8211; 2:30 pm<b> Workshop: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">These Embodied Voices <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><b><span>&#8211; <\/span><\/b><\/span><em>on McPherson Stage<\/em><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small\">This workshop is based on Liz Lerman techniques, exercises by Simone Forti, and Sheetal\u2019s own artistic process as a multi-disciplinary story-teller.\u00a0 The workshops focus on different ways of pairing text, song and sound with gesture to create meaningful and evocative, full-bodied stories. Participants work together and work alone to source material through improvisation, choreographic and theatrical structures, free-writing, research, and dialogue.\u00a0 They may explore their cultural identities, histories, genders, and spiritual backgrounds as these subjects relate to the development of performance.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>******<\/p>\n<p>Bryn Mawr\u2019s Campus is located at 101 N.
