{"id":9824,"date":"2017-01-20T15:56:15","date_gmt":"2017-01-20T15:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/?p=9824"},"modified":"2024-04-22T14:38:30","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T18:38:30","slug":"king-womens-march-swarthmore-and-quakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/2017\/01\/20\/king-womens-march-swarthmore-and-quakers\/","title":{"rendered":"King, Women&#8217;s March, Swarthmore College, and Quakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A message from Chris Densmore, Curator of the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College:<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, I was looking for documentation of Martin Luther King Jr.\u00a0and the early days of the Civil Rights Movement in the records of\u00a0Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends.\u00a0 It seemed like something for the Race Relations Committee to handle, but there was nothing\u00a0there.\u00a0 A little more digging located the records I was seeking in the\u00a0Peace Committee and more specifically in a subcommittee on non-violence.<\/p>\n<p>This week began with commemorations of Dr. King.\u00a0 On Saturday, there will\u00a0be a Women\u2019s March in Washington, DC, and Sister Marches worldwide.\u00a0 I was\u00a0both pleased and a bit surprised to read their statement of \u201cGuiding\u00a0Principles\u201d on their website which was explicitly based on Martin Luther\u00a0King Jr., and the principles of non-violence. It also strikes me that these\u00a0principles and this approach to conflict comes close to how some people\u00a0understand Swarthmore College\u2019s heritage of Quaker values.\u00a0 It is not just\u00a0a strategy for confronting the evils of the day, but a strategy for daily\u00a0living.
