{"id":8819,"date":"2014-09-23T20:00:12","date_gmt":"2014-09-23T20:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/?p=8819"},"modified":"2024-04-22T14:38:45","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T18:38:45","slug":"daniel-hirschel-burns-14-awarded-the-2014-peace-and-justice-studies-association-undergraduate-paper-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/2014\/09\/23\/daniel-hirschel-burns-14-awarded-the-2014-peace-and-justice-studies-association-undergraduate-paper-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniel Hirschel-Burns &#8217;14 awarded the 2014 Peace and Justice Studies Association Undergraduate Paper Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are thrilled to\u00a0announce that, for the second year in a row, a Swarthmore peace and conflict studies special major has won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacejusticestudies.org\">Peace and Justice Studies Association<\/a>&#8216;s Undergraduate Student Paper Award. <strong>Danny Hirschel Burns &#8217;14<\/strong> will receive this year&#8217;s award for his thesis, &#8220;Filling the Gap: Nonviolent Strategies for Civilian Self-protection during Mass Atrocities.&#8221;\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1uVykMz\">Elowyn Corby won<\/a> the award last year.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/09\/Daniel_Hirschel-Burns.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8821\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8821\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/09\/Daniel_Hirschel-Burns.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Hirschel-Burns 14\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/09\/Daniel_Hirschel-Burns.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/09\/Daniel_Hirschel-Burns-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The PJSA is the primary professional association for peace and conflict studies educators and researchers in North America, and it is the North American affiliate of the International Peace Research Association.<\/p>\n<p>Danny&#8217;s thesis was co-advised by Professors Krista Thomason and Lee Smithey. \u00a0The award will be presented at the association&#8217;s\u00a0award ceremony on October 18, 2014 during the annual PJSA meeting at the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiego.edu\/peacestudies\/\"> Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies<\/a> at the University of San Diego.
