Ann, a Quaker, had become a strong influence in the direct action organization, <a href=\"http:\/\/eqat.org\">Earth Quaker Action Team<\/a> (EQAT), working to end mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia. Friends lovingly referred to her as their &#8220;Mountain Woman&#8221;. EQAT recently honored Ann as one of their Elders at a special ceremony at the Friends Center on Cherry Street in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>Others gathered for a memorial service and outdoor reception in Princeton:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 480px; text-align: right;\"><embed width=\"480\" height=\"360\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/pic2.pbsrc.com\/flash\/rss_slideshow.swf\" flashvars=\"rssFeed=http%3A%2F%2Ffeed1260.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii572%2FEQAT%2F2014%252007July%2520Ann%2520Y%2520Memorial%2Ffeed.rss\" wmode=\"transparent\"><\/embed><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/pic.photobucket.com\/share\/icons\/embed\/btn_geturs.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/s1260.photobucket.com\/user\/EQAT\/library\/2014%2007July%20Ann%20Y%20Memorial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/pic.photobucket.com\/share\/icons\/embed\/btn_viewall.gif\" alt=\"EQAT's 2014 07July Ann Y Memorial album on Photobucket\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>We encourage you to read all of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.towntopics.com\/wordpress\/2014\/06\/18\/obituaries-61814\/\">obituary published in Princeton&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Town Topics<\/em><\/a>, but we offer a few excerpts here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">A logician and computer scientist, she was known for combining her Quaker faith with action focused on peace, social justice, racial equality, and the environment. Her life balanced her love for the sacredness of all life, the compassionate concerns of a Quaker activist for the world and the local community, her delight in music, gardening, and art, and her generosity to friends and family.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #555555;\">Ann Yasuhara belonged to the living tradition of Quaker spirit-led peace and justice\u00a0activists. Unflagging in her resistance to war and violence, she studied the philosophy and methods of non-violent\u00a0resolution of conflict\u00a0with George Lakey, the noted Quaker peace activist. In turn, she\u00a0led\u00a0training groups for inner city children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">Most recently she enthusiastically supported \u2014 and went on protests with \u2014 the nonviolent direct\u00a0action group,\u00a0Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT), which works to end mountaintop removal coal mining.<i>\u00a0<\/i>On her 79th birthday she protested on a strenuous mountain climb in West Virginia mining country. In January, just before she was diagnosed with cancer, the Philadelphia-based group honored her as one of its outstanding \u201cwise elders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">\u201cAnn was a leader in the Quaker faith and an inspiration to all of us.
