{"id":4572,"date":"2013-02-21T15:00:05","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T15:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/?p=4572"},"modified":"2024-04-22T14:38:58","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T18:38:58","slug":"new-course-on-security-and-defense-nonviolent-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/2013\/02\/21\/new-course-on-security-and-defense-nonviolent-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"New course on Security and Defense: Nonviolent Strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Advising is coming up, and Prof. George Lakey will be offering a new course in Peace and Conflict Studies for Fall 2013!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">SECURITY AND DEFENSE:\u00a0 NONVIOLENT STRATEGIES<\/p>\n<p><strong>PEAC 040 \/ SOAN 040 H<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/lakey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3330\" title=\"Lakey\" alt=\"Prof. George Lakey\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/lakey-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Threats to security exist on many levels: environment, community, nation, human rights, and others.\u00a0 People naturally mobilize for defense, but often choose among a very narrow set of options. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">This course broadens the framework to focus on modes of nonviolent defense\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">which have had concrete application sometimes involving millions of people, but which remain \u201coff the radar\u201d of most strategic analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">The course will learn from cases of successful nonviolent defense of nations, communities, environmental resources, and human rights under threat.\u00a0 Students will research and write \u201cforgotten cases\u201d for publication in the Global Nonviolent Action Database, giving them experience with the data of civilian resistance.\u00a0 They will also take an example of threat in today\u2019s world and begin to explore how a nonviolent strategy could be devised given the circumstances.\u00a0 Through these activities students will gain research skills and broaden their view of the dynamics of struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Advising is coming up, and Prof. George Lakey will be offering a new course in Peace and Conflict Studies for Fall 2013!
