{"id":4436,"date":"2013-01-17T02:37:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-17T02:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/?p=4436"},"modified":"2024-04-22T14:39:01","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T18:39:01","slug":"course-with-guncrisis-org","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/2013\/01\/17\/course-with-guncrisis-org\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring PEAC course partners with guncrisis.org"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/01\/gun_pike05-copy-280x186-GunCrisis-Kaczmarek..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4447\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"gun_pike05-copy-280x186 GunCrisis Kaczmarek.\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/01\/gun_pike05-copy-280x186-GunCrisis-Kaczmarek..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"130\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the Newtown, CT shootings and a renewed national conversation over gun control, &#8220;<strong>Peace Studies and Action<\/strong>&#8221; &nbsp;PEAC 077 will partner this spring with <a href=\"http:\/\/guncrisis.org\/\">GunCrisis.org<\/a>, an open source reporting community developed to address the epidemic of homicide by gunfire in Philadelphia through online journalism and social media.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Peace Studies and Action<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> aims to bridge the gaps between peace research, theory, and implementation by encouraging students to move between each as we study nonviolent ways of conducting conflict and the challenges of developing and sustaining effective peace work, like <a href=\"http:\/\/guncrisis.org\/\">GunCrisis.org<\/a>. Emphasis is placed on getting close to the experience of peacemakers and activists by reading autobiographical writings, visiting local peace organizations, and\/or dialogue with invited guests. As a class, we will collaborate with <a href=\"http:\/\/guncrisis.org\/\">GunCrisis.org<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;contribute to the work of the organization while developing our own research skills. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Discussion over course readings and exploration of peace studies literature will also be emphasized. This course will encourage collaboration and active participation in delivering the content of the course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/01\/philly_crime_scene_kaczmarek-21-280x186.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4446\" title=\"philly_crime_scene_kaczmarek-21-280x186\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/01\/philly_crime_scene_kaczmarek-21-280x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"186\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The spring semester begins on Martin Luther King day, and as on many topics, Dr. King illuminates peace studies with his vision for education:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"mlk_image_cc_lic_wilpf\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/11\/mlk_image_cc_lic_wilpf-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Rev. Martin Luther King\" width=\"141\" height=\"194\"> <em>\u201cEducation without social action is a one-sided value because it has no true power potential. Social action without education is a weak expression of pure energy. Deeds uninformed by educated thought can take false directions. When we go into action and confront our adversaries, we must be as armed with knowledge as they. Our policies should have the strength of deep analysis beneath them to be able to challenge the clever sophistries of our opponents.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; Martin Luther King, Jr. Where Do We Go from here: Chaos or Community?
