He brought\u00a0Gandhi&#8217;s protest techniques to the American civil rights movement, and\u00a0helped mold Martin Luther King, Jr. into an international symbol of\u00a0peace and nonviolence.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these achievements, Rustin was silenced, threatened, arrested,\u00a0beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions,\u00a0largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era.\u00a0Five years in the making and the winner of numerous awards, \/Brother\u00a0Outsider \/presents a feature-length documentary portrait, focusing on\u00a0Rustin&#8217;s activism for peace, racial equality, economic justice and human\u00a0rights.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3556\" title=\"Harold_Weaver\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/academics\/pcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/Harold_Weaver.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You are invited to a special screening of \/Brother Outsider\/ which will\u00a0be followed by a discussion with filmmaker, Harold Weaver.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harold Weaver is a Non-Resident Fellow, Du Bois Research Institute,\u00a0Harvard University. He is also a filmmaker and principal curator of &#8220;The\u00a0China Project,&#8221; &#8220;The Black Quaker Project&#8221; and &#8220;The Black Film Project.&#8221;\u00a0Co-editor of the 2011 anthology,\/ Black Fire: African American Quakers\u00a0On Spirituality And Human Rights\/, Dr. Weaver taught the first course on\u00a0African cinema in the United States at Rutgers University in 1972.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"490\" height=\"279\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tFJDlzm5zDM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by Sociology and Anthropology, and Black Studies.
