Chertoff, as he is known in the Rio Grande Valley, will not be missed by residents and political leaders in South Texas. Throughout South Texas, and other border regions, Chertoff’s retirement has become a cause for celebration. For many, his approach to the construction of the border wall, including the waiving of environmental laws and public hearings, has represented a lack of transparency and dialogue in theformation of public policy.
