Field Hockey Opens Conference Play With 7-1 Rout of Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa. -Junior Sara McCabe and freshman Kate Teleky each scored two goals as the Swarthmore field hockey team (2-1, 1-0) opened up Centennial Conference play with a commanding 7-1 victory over rival Bryn Mawr. Junior captain Sophia Ferguson, junior Devon Novotnak and freshman Catie Meador each tallied a goal and assist for the Garnet.

The victory is Swarthmore's largest since defeating the College of Notre Dame (Md.) 11-0  on September 9, 2006.

A competitive 2-1 game at the halftime break, the Garnet scored five goals - including four in a nine-minute span - to break the game wide open. Ferguson got the second-half  scoring started from the get-go, as her goal in the 38th minute gave the Garnet a 3-1 lead.

The flurry of second-half Garnet goals started in the 61st minute when Teleky netted her first goal off an assist from freshman Sophia Agathis - her second of the day -to extend the lead to 4-1. Two minutes later, Meador scored after being set-up on the assist from Teleky to make it 5-1. Teleky found the back of the cage again in the 67th minute, scoring an unassited goal to bring the score to 6-1. The final dagger came on McCabe's second goal of the game in the 70th minute, bringing the score to the 7-1 final.

The Garnet finished the game out-shooting the Owls 32-2 while holding a 28-2 advantage in penalty corners.

In goal for Swarthmore, junior Katie Ashmore made one save in 53 minutes of action.

Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Eastern. Action is slated to begin at noon.
