Field Hockey Opens Season With 5-2 Victory Over Richard Stockton

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior Krista Scheirer scored two goals as the Swarthmore field hockey team opened its season with a 5-2 victory over Richard Stockton Thursday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.

Junior Devon Novotnak added a goal and two assists,  junior captain Sarah Ferguson scored while adding an assist, and senior Hoa Pham also found the back of the cage for the Garnet.

Swarthmore found itself trailing 2-1 early in the first half when Richard Stockton’s Jackie Turner and Katie Mattsson scored just seconds apart in the 19th minute of play.

Just two minutes later, Scheirer scored her first goal of the game off a corner – the first of the three Garnet goals set up by corners – to tie the game 2-2. Then in the 26th minute, Novotnak slipped an unassisted goal past the keeper to give Swarthmore a 3-2 lead heading into the break.

In the second half, the Garnet  benefited from two more goals off corners to put the game away. Phem scored from the front of the goal after being set up through a crowd of defenders by senior Abbe Muller, giving the Garnet a 4-2 lead in the 47th minute. The final nail in the coffin came on Scheirer's second goal of the game in the 66th minute, this time being assisted on the corner by Novotnak and Ferguson.

In goal for the Garnet, junior Katie Ashmore recorded six saves.

For the visiting Ospreys, junior Debi O’Kane had 10 saves while facing pressure all game long; the Garnet finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The Garnet return to action on Saturday, September 5, when it hosts Widener from Clothier Field Stadium. Action is slated to begin at noon.
