Mariners Sink Swarthmore Men

KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- Garnet junior attack Gavin Musynske scored two goals but the Swarthmore men's lacrosse team was unable to stem a second-half rally by the hometown U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, falling 7-5 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon on Long Island.

USMMA (3-0) got three points from Zach Gray (two goals, one assist) apiece from and Brian Flannery.

Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) tallied both his goals in the first period, the first assisted by senior Will Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor), as Swarthmore built a 2-1 lead.  Garnet freshman John Bukawyn (Short Hills, N.J. / Phillips Academy [Mass.]) then posted his first collegiate goal and senior Ben Young (Washington, D.C. / St. Alban’s) scored a man-up goal to put the visitors up 4-1 at the intermission.

The Mariners saw the momentum swing in their favor with a trio of Garnet penalties in the third period.  The visitors scored three times in the third and then three more times in the fourth to complete the come-from-behind effort.

The Garnet held a 32-25 shot advantage and scooped up 30 ground balls to 23 for the Mariners.

Swarthmore returns to Pennsylvania for its home opener this Wednesday, March 11 when the College of Wooser visits Clothier Field for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
