Softball Continues Postseason Run

CAPE COD, Mass. -- Swarthmore softball continues to raise the bar each season with 2008 proving no different. On Monday afternoon, the Garnet women received word of an invitation to participate in the 2008 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Championship.

The Garnet (22-18), the six-seed, upset the No.3-seed, Gwynedd-Mercy, on Wednesday afternoon to advance onto the double-elimination tournament this weekend at Washington & Jefferson. Swarthmore faces top-seed Misericordia in the first game at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Click here for directions.

This is the first ECAC appearance for Swarthmore softball and the fourth bid the Garnet athletics program has received this year (men’s and women’s soccer each won the championships while men’s lacrosse begins its tournament on Friday night).

For the third consecutive season, the Garnet reached the 20-win mark and took part in the Centennial Conference Softball Championships. Swarthmore is no stranger to strong competition, having faced three NCAA Tournament-bound teams this season. Pitching and defense are the recipes for success in 2008 as the Garnet posted a .966 fielding percentage and a 2.35 earned run average (both the best in the last seven seasons).
