Weller Medals on Day Two

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Junior Cait Mullarkey and senior Ross Weller medaled in the steeplechase events as the Swarthmore track & field team competed at the 2008 Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on the campus of Gettysburg College Saturday afternoon.

Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy) picked up a bronze medal in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:22.25. Rebecca Woo ’11 (Davis, Calif. / Davis Senior) ran a personal-best in the steeplechase of 12:35.61; her time was good for ninth place finish.

Weller (McConnellsburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) posted a personal-best while marking the second fastest time in Swarthmore history in the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase. His 9:25.29 race-time earned him a Centennial silver medal and was just shy of the NCAA provisional 9:23.00 cut for nationals. Also running in the steeplechase for the Garnet was senior Jon Shoop (Reno, Nev. / Incline), who completed his race in 9:58.08 for a season-best time, good for ninth place overall.

In the men’s 800 meter trials Swarthmore junior Connor Darby (Nashville, Tenn. / MLK Academic Magnet) just missed qualifying for tomorrow’s finals with a season-best 1:56.81 race-time, beating his previous season best’s efforts on April 19th when he finished with 1:57.45 on the clock.

A season-best for Youngjun Heo ’09 (Newburgh, Ind. / Castle High School) came when racing in the men’s 100 meter dash as he crossed the finish line with a mark of 12.07 seconds. While freshman Chris Mayer-Bacon (South Jersey, N.J. / Gateway Regional) also registered a season-best in the men’s 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.94.

Freshman Dan Kurz (Melrose, Mass. / Melrose) was one of four Swarthmore runners today to post a personal best; he finished the men’s 400 meter run in 52.64 seconds.

The men’s 4 x 800 meter relay finished seventh overall with the running efforts of Seth Green ’10 (Katanah, N.Y. / John Jay), Kurz, Mickey Katz ’08 (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) and Alex Van Buren ’10 (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) who collectively finished at 8:25.82.

Junior Bess Ritter (Quaker Hill, Conn. / Wasterford) picked up points for Swarthmore with her 20:12.83 race-time in the women’s 10,000 meter run with a seventh place finish.

The Garnet track & field team will finish up the 2008 Centennial Conference Championships tomorrow, Sunday, May 4.
