Butterfly Tops Day Two
LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Garnet swim teams, highlighted by new Conference record in the butterfly event, kept pace at the 2008 Centennial Swim Championships, holding strong in second place in the men's and women's competitions.
The Swarthmore women finished the night with 425 points, trailing leader Gettysburg (624). The men had 424.5 points after the two-session day while Franklin & Marshall led with 604 points.
The Garnet women dominated the 100 butterfly, putting four swimmers in the top seven spots. Anne Miller ‘10 (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) and Jennie Lewis ’08 (pictured
below) (Darien, Conn. / Darien) matched stroke for stroke, breaking the Conference and school record with identical times of 57.72. The previous record was set by Miller (57.92) in 2007. Also scoring in event was Casey Osborn ‘10 (Albany, Calif. / Albany) with a fifth-place finish (59.48) and Allie Jordan ‘09 (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna) in seventh (1:00.16).
Jordan, (left)who set a new school record on the lead leg (100 backstroke) of last night’s 400-medley relay, picked up her first individual medal (third total) touching the wall at 1:00.30 to earn the silver medal in the 100 backstroke.
The women’s relay squads collected two more medals. The 200-medley relay earned a bronze medal with a time of 1:52.25. Jordan broke another school record with a strong lead leg (28.56), first-year Stephanie Su (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany Hills) followed up with a 32.64, Miller clocked in at 26.30 and Lewis anchored with a 24.75 free. Also earning a bronze relay medal was the 800-freestyle relay of Allison Bishop ‘11 (Macungie, Pa. / Emmaus), Franny Zhang ‘08 (Piscataway, N.J. / The Peddie School), Chelsea Brett ‘11 (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) and Miller with a time of 8:03.17.
On the men’s side, freshman Sterling Satterfield (Durham, N.C. / Charles E. Jordan) collected an individual medal for the second straight day, earning a bronze in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.15.
The Garnet men picked up another medal in the relay events. The 200 IM relay squad collected a bronze medal as Santiago Lombo ‘11 (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit), Satterfield, junior Brian Roth (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) and Doug Gilchrist-Scott '09 (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) clocked a time of 1:40.82.
The final day of competition takes place tomorrow, February 24 with the first preliminaries (200 back) starting at 10:00 a.m.
