Swat Records Fall on Day One of CC Championships

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Swarthmore swim teams got off to a flying start at the 2008 Centennial Conference Swim Championships, breaking two school records in the Kunkel Aquatic Center Friday night.

Both Garnet squads sit in second place after the first day of competition—the Swarthmore women totaled 205.5 points (Gettysburg leads with 277 points) while the Swarthmore men collected 190.5 points, sitting right behind first-day leader Franklin & Marshall with 261 points.

Swarthmore’s most exciting moment came in the top sprinting event on theDoug Gilchrist-Scott ‘09 men’s side. Garnet junior captain Doug Gilchrist-Scott (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) used an explosive turn off the far wall to capture the gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle. Gilchrist-Scott (right) came into the Championship meet listed fifth on the pre-meet psych sheets, but kicked past all other competitors to take down the previous school record of 21.57 set by Jonathan Augat ’07 last year.

Garnet sophomore All-America Anne Miller (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) nearly broke her 500 freestyle record time in the morning heat, posting the second-fastest time (5:12). Miller successfully crushed her school-record (5:11.31) in the Friday night final, earning the bronze medal with a time of 5:09.96. Freshman Allison Bishop (Macungie, Pa. / Emmaus) swam a gutsy 500, finishing fifth in a race that saw the top two swimmers post NCAA B-cut times.

Gilchrist-Scott collected two other medals on the night as the Garnet men captured the bronze in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay. The Swarthmore quartet of Santiago Lombo ’11 (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit), Thomas Kelleher ’09 (Brockton, Mass. / Moses Brown), Michael Ahn ’10 (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista), and Gilchrist-Scott clocked in at 1:27.16 in the 200 free relay, capped by a stirring anchor leg (20.89) from their captain. A time of 3:36.11 was good enough for third place in the 400 medley relay—the top Swarthmore effort was turned in by Lombo, freshman Sterling Satterfield (Durham, N.C.), junior Brian Roth (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) and Gilchrist-Scott.

The Garnet women picked up a pair of silver medals in the relay events. Senior Franny Zhang (Piscataway, N.J. / The Peddie School), sophomore Julia Wrobel (Lawrenceville, N.J. / Lawrence), freshman Chelsea Brett (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) and senior Jennie Lewis (Darien, Conn. / Darien) combined for a time of 1:42.90 in the 200 freestyle relay while sophomore Allie Jordan (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna) and freshman Stephanie Su (Parsippany Hills, N.J. / Parsippany) joined Miller and Brett in clocking a time of 4:02.86 in the 400 medley relay.

Swarthmore junior Stephen Shymon (San Diego, Calif. / Univ. of San Diego) proved the Conference meet is his time to shine, posting the second-fastest 500 freestyle time of his career, capturing the silver medal for the second consecutive year with a time of 4:45.98. Senior Andrew Frampton (Silver Spring, Mary. / Gonzaga College HS) just missed a medal, swimming fourth with a time of 4:48.70, his fastest effort in the 500 free.

Satterfield, one of the top freshman swimmers in the Centennial, picked up his first Championship medal, claiming the bronze in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.67.

The Swarthmore women picked up a bronze medal in the 200 IM as sophomore Casey Osborn (Albany, Calif. / Albany) posted a time of 2:15.30. Lewis swam a strong 50 freestyle, narrowly missing a medal while tying for fourth in 25 second flat.
