McCormick Named Centennial Player of the Week Again

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior Ian McCormick was named Centennial Conference (CC) Player of the Week for men’s basketball on Feb. 18, as announced by the Conference office.

McCormick (Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) , a center, averaged 23.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks in a 1-1 week for the Garnet. He had 29 points, 15 rebounds and three assists in the 72-57 win against Muhlenberg on Feb. 13. McCormick followed that effort with 18 points, 11 boards, three assists and three blocks in a 69-55 loss at Gettysburg on Feb. 16.

In the Gettysburg game, McCormick became the program’s all-time rebounding leader (770) and isIan McCormick ‘08 one point shy of becoming the first Swarthmore male to accumulate 1,500 points and 700 rebounds in a career. He has already broken two other school records this season—blocks in a season (69 currently) and blocks in a career (189), both held previously by Rob Ruffin ‘92.

McCormick, an economics major, has been exceptional in Conference action, leading the Centennial in scoring (22.3 points per game), rebounding (10.6 per game) while ranking second in blocks per game (3.44).  He is on pace to become the first player in Conference history to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in Centennial action.

This is McCormick’s second CC Player of the Week nod this season (third of his career)—he was selected on Nov. 28, 2007 after scoring a career-high 36 points at Arcadia.

Swarthmore is 6-17 overall, 2-14 in the Centennial, and will play its final two games of the season this week. The Garnet travel to Washington (Mary.) College on Wednesday, Feb. 20 for an 8:00 p.m. game and then host rival Haverford on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4:00 p.m.
