Riley Named All-Region
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College freshman Kathryn Riley has been named to the 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region team. Riley is a utility player selection on the second team in the East Region, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on May 7. Riley, who saw action at first base and third base, put up strong numbers at the plate, leading the team in seven offensive categories--batting average (.363), hits (37), doubles (8), home runs (3), total bases (54),walks (12) and on-base percentage (.458).
Riley recently became the fifth Swarthmore first-year to make First-Team All-Centennial, earning a spot on the team as a pitcher. She posted a record of 11-4 in 2007 with a 1.15 ERA in 97.0 innings, tallying three shut-outs while striking out 74 batters. Riley was named Centennial Pitcher of the Week for April 9-15 after pitching her second shut-out of the season in a 4-0 Swarthmore win over Muhlenberg on April 10, striking out nine batters with no walks. She then allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out four in a 9-6 win at Gettysburg on April 14.
Riley is just the second Swarthmore player to make All-Region; infielder Christine Sendelsky '09 was a second-team at-large selection in 2006.
Riley is the lone Centennial Conference player listed as high as second-team All-Region--Alex Speace from Dickinson (the 2007 Centennial Player of the Year) and Diana Rosemier were at-large selections on the third team.
Swarthmore (22-13 overall, 11-5 Centennial) had one of the best seasons in school history in 2007, breaking the school record for conference wins while earning its second consecutive Centennial playoff berth (also a program-first).
